What are the biggest misconceptions manufacturers have relative to their OSHA responsibilities related to combustible dust?

The biggest misconception among manufacturers is that OSHA is just presenting them with a guideline, not with something they have to do. The fact is, OSHA is beefing up enforcement of safety measures on several fronts, and combustible dust has become one of the top priorities since the agency re-issued its National Emphasis Program (NEP) on this topic in March 2008.

Under the OSHA NEP, manufacturers are required to follow applicable NFPA standards including the… Continue

DUST EXPLOSION TESTING REQUIREMENT UNDER NEW OSHA NATIONAL EMPHASIS PROGRAM

Dust explosions are a serious hazard in industries nationwide. They lead to the loss of production, plant/facility destruction and personnel injury or fatality.

In 2005, the US Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board issued a report stating that between 1980 and 2005, at least 281 deadly combustible dust incidents (fires and explosions) occurred in the U.S., killing 119 people and injuring 718 others while extensively damaging or destroying facilities. Congressional hearings… Continue

Secondary Dust Explosions

Remember when your mom told you to keep your

room clean.Well if you work in a facility that creates dust or

handles powders remember what mom told you, “Clean your

room!” Fugitive dust is the cause of most secondary dusts

explosions that can be devastating and even fatal. So in your

facility all areas must be kept clean. This includes floors,

rafters, sills, and anywhere dust or powder can accumulate.

FAQ: Can I place a dust collector inside a facility if we are handling a material with a high Kst?

Yes, a dust collector can be placed inside the confines of a facility even though it may have a relatively high deflagration index (Kst). Both explosion venting and chemical suppression may be options depending on the location of the collector within the facility and its vicinity to an outside wall… Continue

Primary Dust Explosion Strength Required to Initiate Secondary

Primary Dust Explosion Strength Required to Initiate Secondary Dust Explosion.pdfDestructive dust explosions often occur in two stages in buildings where accumulation of dust deposits on the floors occurs. An off-normal dust handling situation results in a local dust suspension and an initial (or primary) explosion. The air disturbance caused by the primary explosion disperses the dust deposits and now a much larger quantity of dust is suspended and a highly destructive secondary explosion… Continue

Testing Hazards of Novel Dusts

Dust explosions are a serious

hazard in the process industries.

They have lead to the destruction of

property, loss of production and

injury to personnel or death. The

risk of a dust explosion is the product

of the probability of occurrence and

severity of the consequences. One

method used to ascertain the severity

of the consequence of an explosion is

to establish its magnitude. This can

be done by using ASTM E1226

“Standard Test… Continue

Fugitive Dust Control - Don't Let it Sit Around

A massive dust explosion occurred on

January 29, 2003 at theWest Pharmaceutical Services

facility in Kinston, North Carolina. This catastrophic

event claimed the lives of 6 employees and severely

damaged much of the facility. The fuel for this

disaster was determined to be an end product of the

polyethylene slurry used on the rubber compounding

line. As the rubber dried, a fine powder formed. Air

currents in the facility caused the powder to drift… Continue

hazards in plants and process operations.

Ways to evaluate hazards have been

ignitability and explosion output. Criteria

for successful engineering hazards analysis

have been identified. In powder operations,

dust and hybrid fires and explosions can be

minimized so that the potential is never

Vitamin Manufacturer Takes Double Dose of Dust Collectors and Safety Precautions

Some would say that two identical dust collection systems on a single, centralized vacuum system is redundant, redundant. One vitamin manufacturer who wanted non-stop dust collection on a '24/7' basis would agree! But he'll also tell you that he replaced 10 small dust collectors of different types that were scattered throughout his manufacturing plant, resulting in filter inventory, maintenance and dust disposal that were time consuming and… Continue

Electrical dust explosion protection

Dust explosions

Dust explosions have been known in Europe since the first cereal mills were built. There is a risk of

fires and explosions in all industrial plants which have to deal with combustible dusts, whether this be

as production material or as residual waste.

In order to avoid danger to people, plant and the environment, electrical equipment operated in potentially

explosive dust atmospheres may not be a source of ignition.

The… Continue

ICE your Phone - In Case of Emergency

ICE - In Case of EmergencyProgramming of Emergency Contact Numbers in your PLATEAU Cell PhonesICE – In Case of Emergency - programming of your cell phones with ICE is a concept that was developed by a paramedic in England. It was realized that most of his victims did not carry emergency contact information but did carry cell phones. So the campaign started was to get people who carry cell phones to put in a listing of ICE in their cell phone directory with a number that should be called In Case…See More
