Abandoned Iron Mines Inspire Photo Exhibit

Abandoned mines are a safety concern significant enough for MSHA to have awarded $3.9 million to mining states in December 2003, 16 months after the Quecreek incident in Pennsylvania, so they could create electronic, georeferenced maps of their mines and archive original mine maps. Quecreek was an inundationg caused when miners at the mine of that name accidentally broke into an adjacent, abandoned mine and were trapped by an inundation for three days before being rescued.
