While you may not need FR undergarmets you should educate your personnel to the risk of wearing non FR manmade fabrics which when exposed to heat will melt fuse to skin and act as a heat sink deeping the burns. Having worked at an ammunition plant and served as a volunteer fire fighter I wear only 100% cotton underwear and when involved in at risk activity wear appropriate PPE. The other delema is street clothing, fire fighters have an NFPA station uniform standard that requires FR trousers and shirts. This is what is worn under their turnout gear. Real protection is provided by layers, the more FR layers the better.

In my opinion it would depend on the risk. If there is a possibility of being engulfed in flames then FR underwear would seem to be justified ... Racing drivers wear FR underwear under their FR racing suits .... however if the risk is less then I would say that it is probably overkill.

Having answered that I have a question for the group. On our construction sites electrical power is fed from a main distribution board, then to satellite boards, to provide power for tools and equipment. Tradesmen plug extension leads into the satellite boards. Every power outlet on each satellite board is protected by a Residual Current Device (RCD or Safety Switch). Sometimes the length of the extension lead is insufficient or they wish to use a number of tools off the same lead. So they plug the lead into a Earth Leakage Control Box (ELCB) which has 4 power outlets, each of which is RCD protected. My company does not allow this because it has the potential to overload the circuit in the satellite board and there is the possibility of the RCDs cancelling each other and therefore not providing protection on the circuit. There is no definitive answer that I can find to the cancellation possibility. Electrical engineers and electricians seem divided on the issue. Can anyone shed any further light? Is there any research, data or info that may give an answer either way?

I have a question for the group. I posted a blog today about the need for FR undergarments. Many companies make sure that their employees are wearing FR clothing with regards to Arc Flash protection but forget about the undergarments that might ignite or melt in extreme conditions.
One of the comments that I got this morning asked if employees always need FR undergarments.
I would love some feedback here or on the blog page at: http://www.safetycommunity.com/profiles/blogs/fr-clothing-all-the-way-or-not
Thanks,

Hi Hizairy ... remember that a hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm.

Manual Handling - where people lift, pull, push, carry etc with their hands, arms and body causing musculorskeletal injury.
Electrical Hazards - electrical safety of tools, switchboards, buzz bars, machinery
Plant - machines etc ensuring they are safe to operate with appropriate guarding.
Hazardous substances - ensuring procedures are in place to stop people ingesting, breathing or absorbing substances and fumes
Truck loading and unloading
Forklift and mobile crane operation
Work at height - eliminating the chance for people to fall, or objects being dropped
Hot work - anything that has the potential to cause fires
Confined space work
Interaction between people and mobile plant

I haven't been counting, but how many is that? It should give you a good start on cataloguing 10 hazards.

Morning Craig, your question leads to a number of different answers. If an injury is reportable due to lost time or alternate duties then the number of days depends on which state you are working in. For instance in Queensland it is 4 days, in NSW it is 7 days. However injuries are also reportable, regardless of the number of days lost, according to severity or type ..... fatalities must be reported immediately, very serious injuries within 24 hours, serious injuries within 3 days, any electrocution within 24 hours. All companies in Oz start counting LTI or ADI days immediately. Hope that answers the question.
