Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis comments on decline in fatal occupational injuries during 2009
WASHINGTON — Preliminary results from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries released today show a decline in workplace fatalities in 2009 compared with 2008. Last year, 4,340 workers died from work-related injuries, down from a final count of 5,214 fatal work injuries in 2008. In response, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis issued the following statement:

"A single worker hurt or killed on the job is one too many.

"While a decrease in the number of fatal work injuries is encouraging, we cannot — and will not — relent from our continued strong enforcement of workplace safety laws.

"As the economy regains strength and more people re-enter the workforce, the Department of Labor will remain vigilant to ensure America’s workers are kept safe while they earn a paycheck. After all, as I’ve said before, no job is a good job unless it is also safe."

I think these fake sicknesses are backfiring on the local economy. How can picking up pieces of oil off sand require a face mask, for example? If it's that dangerous who would ever contemplate going there for a vacation!

Thanks J!
I was obviously looking in the wrong area. I was checking 29CFR not ANSI.
Thanks again!

Don,
ANSI Z358.1 5.5.2 states that "plumbed eyewashes, eye/face washes and showers should be activated weekly for a period long enough to verify operation and ensure that the flushing fluid is available". You should also verify that they are offering tepid water (between 60 and 100 degrees F). We also just had this discussion!

What is the frequency of testing for a full body shower inthe event of a corrosive accident? We have been debating this within my company. Is it a weekly or monthly flow check for a full emergency shower?

Again, the parking lot issue was an attempt to "vent" about an unfortunate incident and possibly garner opinions on how a trip in a parking lot has any bearing on the safety of this workplace. The "safety cop" issue has been beaten to death, most agreed to disagree and have left it at that.

I don't think the question on the parking lot incident displayed much experience and I think there are many occasions where termination or discipline is required. His points seem to circle around how not enough supervision was being conducted in workplaces and he cited a number of valid situations in support of his contentions. you make it sound like he would fire somebody for tripping in the parking lot. Maybe the level of discussion will improve here but I see not much evidence since he was booted.

Let's say that the level of the forum dropped dramtically for a time, and has since recovered. Do he need to be banned, I don't know, not my call but the forum is retunring to its intended state.

What I menat by asking his experience level was that it was clear that he had not developed a program with any substance. In his own words, safety is the standard with some common sense added to it, or something to that effect. I and others had asked what experience he was basing his decisions on to no avail. His common sense did not demonstrate any practical experience. When one is looking to be the safety cop and discipline or terminate people, that is a sign of inexperience in running a safety program. While it is true that it does get to this level sometimes, with Patty it seemed to be the only recourse due when someone violated a safety procedure.
I in no way attempted to piss him off on purpose, well maybe until the end when I started calling him Patty. What had started as valid discussion was turned in to insinuations and name calling.

Have a look at the many attacks and tell me he was the only one who should have been banned. I think you might agree with me.

red exit lights vs green exit lights

I am wanting to know  if I should I buy red exit signs or green exit signs? Does OSHA care? Is there one that is more accepted in the mechanic industry? Thanks Mary
