WORKPLACE VIOLENCE PREVENTION TRAINING . . .

To address the growing trend of harrasment, assualt and violence in the workplace (going postal) we have introduced a curricula around Workplace Violence Prevention Training http://workplace-violence-prevention-training.findlay.edu. Oddly enough, there isn't a big demand for it in the industries we generally train (manufacturing, transportation, raw materials and petroleum/chemicals).

There is a bigger demand in industries like retail, distribution, education and public sector (government) and service sector. Unfortunately, these do not have the safety training budgets that manufacturing and industrial have.

Do others see this kind of dichotomy in industrial versus service sector training need and budget?

After a review of the available research published over a 5 year period, the American Heart Association released its 2010 CPR Guidelines. As expected, the focus for CPR is on good quality chest compressions. Here are the differences between the 2005 and the 2010 CPR Guidelines:

A-B-C is for babies; now it's C-A-B!
It used to be follow your ABC's: airway, breathing and chest compressions. Now, Compressions come first, only then do you focus on Airway and Breathing. The only exception to the rule will be newborn babies, but everyone else -- whether it's infant CPR, child CPR or adult CPR -- will get chest compressions before you worry about the airway.

Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis comments on decline in fatal occupational injuries during 2009
WASHINGTON — Preliminary results from the Bureau of Labor Statistics' National Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries released today show a decline in workplace fatalities in 2009 compared with 2008. Last year, 4,340 workers died from work-related injuries, down from a final count of 5,214 fatal work injuries in 2008. In response, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis issued the following statement:

"A single worker hurt or killed on the job is one too many.

"While a decrease in the number of fatal work injuries is encouraging, we cannot — and will not — relent from our continued strong enforcement of workplace safety laws.

"As the economy regains strength and more people re-enter the workforce, the Department of Labor will remain vigilant to ensure America’s workers are kept safe while they earn a paycheck. After all, as I’ve said before, no job is a good job unless it is also safe."

I think these fake sicknesses are backfiring on the local economy. How can picking up pieces of oil off sand require a face mask, for example? If it's that dangerous who would ever contemplate going there for a vacation!

Don,
ANSI Z358.1 5.5.2 states that "plumbed eyewashes, eye/face washes and showers should be activated weekly for a period long enough to verify operation and ensure that the flushing fluid is available". You should also verify that they are offering tepid water (between 60 and 100 degrees F). We also just had this discussion!

What is the frequency of testing for a full body shower inthe event of a corrosive accident? We have been debating this within my company. Is it a weekly or monthly flow check for a full emergency shower?

Again, the parking lot issue was an attempt to "vent" about an unfortunate incident and possibly garner opinions on how a trip in a parking lot has any bearing on the safety of this workplace. The "safety cop" issue has been beaten to death, most agreed to disagree and have left it at that.
