Dear Colleagues,

Nationally we are looking for qualified, independent instructors who would be willing to work part time teaching safety courses that are specifically tailored to meet the identified needs of one of our clients.  While these instructors would have little autonomy with course content, they will have the flexibility to meet state and local regulations as needed.  The courses our client is currently interested in are:

  • Aerial Lift (Bucket Truck)
  • Ladder Use and Safety
  • Confined Space and Gas Detection
  • Excavation and Trenching
  • Forklift Safety-Powered Industrial Truck
  • Work Zone Safety
  • CPR / First Aid (No Certificate Needed – Review Only)

If you know of interested instructors please have them contact Fran@ussafety.us

The tar kettle question on the NAVFAC Exam stimulated some thoughts.  The EM 385 requires that the most stringent safety standard must be followed.  Therefore some adjustments to our onsite applications need to be addressed.

EM 386.06.C.01.c    Two 20-BC extinguishers within 25 feet

NFPA 241.9.4.1       One 20-B extinguisher 5-25 feet away

Solution:                 Two 20-BC extinguishers no closed that 5' or more than 25' away

EM 386.06.C.01.f    Tar Kettle must have a tight closing lid

NFPA 241.9.2.3      Tar Kettle must have a gravity closing lid

Solution:                Tar Kettle must have a tight, gravity closing lid

EM 386.06.C.01.a    Tar Kettle must be downwind, secure footing & protected against

                              traffic, tripping or similar hazards

NFPA 241.9.2.1       Tar Kettle must be operated in a controlled area outside the bldg

Solution:                  Add the word “outside” to any section in 06.C.01

EM 386.06.C.01.j     Tar Kettle must not exceed structural capacity of roof deck??

NFPA 241.9.2.2       Tar Kettle may not be located on roof

Solution:                 Tar Kettle may not be located on roof

We are looking for a SSHO (Site Safety & Health Officer) in South Florida that will have to be approved by the U.S. Army Corps Engineers.  The job is short, but may develop into an extended position.  Safety professionals that have been previously approved by the Corps as an SSHO would expedite the investigative process and allow us to maintain our time line.  If you are, or have anyone in your data base that might be interest in this position, please share this information

I also can get people a link to online EM385-1-1 training as the Navy Safety Shack training link has issues in some modules.

I have an electronic pdf copy of the most recent EM385-1-1 and links to Navy and USACE online version. If you would like a copy I can get it to you. Also, I have worked both Navy and Army sites so feel free to shoot me any questions and I'll help as best I can from my experiences.

Hello All,

I am currently working on a USACE project. I don’t know if this group has much focus on the EM385, but I know that for someone who is on their first Corp project, it can be a bit challenging at times. I’ve been working on my first USACE project and had a good deal of questions when I started this project. So if anyone has any questions or wants to discus the EM385 feel free to shoot me a message.
