Comment by Teresa Wester on February 7, 2011 at 10:14am Hi! I have a work area that is in a highly contaminated (radiological) area where our employees are in a containment type atmosphere. The employees use hand held saws to size metals, there is a bag house for the ventilation system, and a gantry crane. Due to the radiological conditions, the employees are in SAR, two pair of disposable coveralls, then an additional hood over all of that! They also wear a headset for their radios to communicate w/ the outside support.
I would like to evaluate their noise exposure using personal dosimeters, but have never done it under so much PPE before. The hood is of a tyvek type material w/ a very stiff "face piece" and I am concerned that the noise from the hood will scew the results. But I am also thinking that the dosimeters are designed to take that in to consideration? Our employees are only in the work area for about 1.5 hours at a time, and usually enter the area 2x day. The balance of the day is spent in outside support.
I have used the quest personal dosimeters, which I love and I feel might be perfect for this situation. Could you recommend any other models, or do you have any better ideas?
TIA
teresa
