Online Safety Community

I would like to open a discussion regarding splash goggles and safety glasses. It is puzzling to me that some people still use safety glasses when handling hazardous liquids, loosening tubing fittings and pipe fittings, etc. There is also an alarming number of workers I've spoken to who do know the difference between: 1) Vented Goggles, 2) Non-vented, and 3) Indirect Venting. (Can we agree that 'Non-vented' and 'Vapor-Proof' or 'Gas-Tight' are the same?)

OSHA, NIOSH and ANSI give the user too much freedom in my opinon.

Hello, a great topic to talk about.

I work for a distributor representing major brands like 3M, Kimberly-Clark, MSA, etc.

I agreed that non-vented, vapor proof & gas tight are the same, no doubt about it. But should we be referring to a diving mask in this instance? I think the correct way is to have indirect vent type as an apporved type so that we could help the 'fogging' issue since our eyes do 'breathe' every moment. What's your take?

It's shocking to know that workers don't know the difference between the direct and indirect vented glasses. Such lack of knowledge can prove to be hazardous in the mishap prone industrial work. While working with liquid or gases, I'll readily suggest the usage of the vented masks to protect eyes from the direct contact with harmful chemicals. I do not prefer non-vented glasses as I do agree with Chag that eyes do breathe and thus gets distracted by the foggy appearance.
