My opinion: videos are poor substitutes for live presentations and are rarely effective as training aids. The only video I recommend or use is Remember Charlie.

Hello Matt,

Thank you for replying. I am with you when it comes to just plugging in a video and leaving the room. I agree that we need to do more when we can. I have had somewhat of a success with the video's, but only when I supplemented with verbal training and documented with a small, simple review test that we went over to ensure that all understood. I'm still one to believe, the more senses we touch during a training, the more likely the person will remember a larger percentage of the material. Once again, thank you for replying.

I realize we hate to hear “it depends”, nevertheless experience has taught me that a variety of training media options (DVD, PowerPoint, Tailgate Talk; etc) with consideration in the company’s operation and the Safety Officer ’s level of safety knowledge plays a major role in my recommendation for a training media solution to clients.

I have clients that the DVD serves as an advantage in the short term, however I would be negligent if I did not point out one of the disadvantages is the limit ability to personalize training to their specific industry or facility activity or operation.
I usually started a business on DVD while I conduct OSHA Outreach, Train-the-trainer, and specialized training and after the Safety Officer is more comfortable with the subject matter I transition to PowerPoint slides that have been personalized with photos of their facilities and operations.

There are business that an online training solution meets their needs most effectively, while others most employees or contractors do not have access to the internet. It depends, sorry!
